F1 to H1b change of status

Dear Advisor
Could you please tell me if a student in F1 status applies for H1B change of status and receives an approved notice start date having OCT 1st 2011,loses his F1 status immediately after approval or after the kick in date which is 1st Oct 2011.

The person will remain to be in the previous status (F1 in this case) until the H1B becomes effective (Oct 1st in this case).
