stay after H1B applied

my L1B visa expired on Jun12, 2011. my I94 is valid till 6 Dec 2011.
I have applied for a L1B extension and it went through RFE.
I am not sure if my L1B extension would be approved.
So I asked my company to file a H1B.
So my question is
i) If my L1B extension gets rejected and i ahave recieved the H1B application number. So can I be elligible to stay in US legally?

You can stay and work until your I-94 date, visa date does not matter.
If another change of status (to H1 in your case) or extension of status (L1) is received by USCIS before I-94 date, then you can stay past the I-94 date until that application remains pending.

so does that means if I get the H1B application receipt number before my I-94 date, I am legal to stay and work in US ?
