Layoff on H1B - urgent inputs required

Hi,

My friend who is on H1B visa was laid off yesterday. This was done without any prior intimation. I wanted to know the following:

1. What are the options that he has, till he gets a new job
2. Is visitor visa or a F1 visa advisable
3. what happens if he remains unemployed for 2-3 months and than gets a job and applies for H1 transfer.

I would appreciate a quick response on the same.
