Can extension be applied for H1 after its expiry when not in US?

I know this is little weird but I am in this condition now. I am in US now and have a H1B visa valid till Dec 2012. I have to go back to India in Sep/Oct 2012. Can I apply for extension after visa expiry e.g. in June 2013 from India itself.

If I apply for extension now, my company will force me to come back soon which I dont want to do as I have some personal commitment until next year June.
