Travel to US on B1/B2 while H1B has been filed

Hi,
My employer has filed the H1B petition and it will take couple of weeks for us to hear back. In the mean time are we allowed to travel to the US for few days on our existing B1/B2 visa? i am asking this because we were told that we have to be outside US before the petition can be filed.

No issues as long as the employer is filing the H1B petition for consular process.

The petition has been submitted to the USCIS for premium processing. Is that what you are referring to as "consular processing"?

If the petition was already filed (when you were outside U.S), then it could have been filed only for consular process. No issues travelling to U.S in B1/B2.
