Green Card Processing on 14 month H1 Validity

Hi,
I just got my H1 petition Approved but the validity of it is only from Oct 1st,2012 till Dec 30,2013 as I would be completing my 6 years by then.

Just wanted to know by when should I apply for Green Card if I find a sponsor so that I can continuously stay in US till the GC gets approved ?
