I hope to be granted a H1 visa and my wife and Kids a H4 by end of the year. My wife and kids may not come until summer 2013 and even then she may go back and forth for work contracts in the UK, would this be problem? In other words is there any issue with being granted a H4 visa but not being with your spouse in USA for the majoirity of the time in any given year? Would this be frowned upon in anyway and go against us when applying for extentsion

It should not be an issue at all. If dependent stays in US on H4/L2 etc without H1/L1 being present with them for long time it can be an issue. In your case your spouse is outside US without you so should not be any issue. This is my opinion not legal advice.
