I-94 Renewal with EAD

My wife had to apply for new I-94 card since her passport was renewed. It has been five weeks but she has not received the new card yet. Her current I-94 expires in Oct 2012. In the meantime she has received her EAD AP card for green card application. Currently she is working on same job.

Question: Does she really needs new I-94 card with EAD card? Please advise.
