  • Housing Credit question

    Hello All,

My friend has a H1 B visa and SSN, while his wife is on H4 and does not have an SSN or ITIN yet. Even though they are filing IT returns jointly, would they be eligible for the Housing Credit refund of $8000?

I remember in 2007 many people who had dependent family members (using ITIN) could not get the economic stimulus. Would similar rules apply for housing credit too?

    Thanks & Regards

The housing credit for $8000 is for people who purchased a home recently I THINK. Based on the information you just gave, you haven't mentioned whether your friend purchased a home recently. So no one can just file and expect the 8k. Experts correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, he purchased a house now

No, he did not purchase the house yet when I posted this my earlier question. But was about to offer a contract to purchase one and we had this doubt.

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it was an implicit assumption that one is purchasing/purchased a house but I see your point now.

No problem. But I heard that this 8k goes directly as a credit towards the house-loan. so if the house-loan is $100,000, an 8k credit is added, so the loan comes down to $92000.Again I just heard about this but I think this is how it works. You don't really get 8k in cash even if you bought a house.
