For how long do I have to come back to the US to maintain residency?

I'm currently outside the US, and want to come back to fulfill the requirements to maintain my permanent residency status. How long do I have to stay in the US bofere I leave again? I want to stay in South America for a few months at the time, at least 10? Can I do that, anf if so how long do i have to come back and saty in the US before I leave again?
