  • Accidentally registered to vote under DACA.

As the title states, I made the terrible mistake of registering to vote back in 2014. It was outside a grocery store, there were people asking for petition signatures. They told me all I needed was my driver's license information and a signature. I married my wife (a U.S. Citizen) about 3 years ago. We wanted to apply for an adjustment of status, as my last entry to the U.S. was a legal entry. During this time, I came across a forum advising people to check if they had accidentally registered to vote through the DMV. I checked, and my heart sank when I saw I was registered.

I assumed it was through the DMV, but when I got myself unregistered, I also received a copy of my registration document. It turns out it was filled out by that person asking for signatures, but of course, with my signature. The registration document states at the bottom corner that it was filled out by someone else and shows their name and contact information, so it's clear it wasn't filled out by me, but again, I did sign it. (One of the worst mistakes of my life)

I have talked to two relatively reputable immigration attorneys. The first one advised me against applying for permanent residency. He stated that they would most likely decline my application and it was very possible to start deportation procedures. I was mortified, so I told my wife that it was too big of a risk so we left it at that. Recently, I contacted another attorney to get a second opinion. This attorney stated that I may or may not get declined, but if I got declined, I could still keep my Deferred Action status and live life as I am now. As terrible as getting denied would be, at least I'd be able to keep DACA.

I've searched through a lot of forums, but I couldn't find an answer for my specific case. Would it be best if I got a third opinion? Or should I bite the bullet and proceed with this attorney?

    Thank you everyone.
