When to apply for SSN when you enter US ?

Hi

I would coming to US on L1B visa on 21st July 2015. My family members will accompany me and they have dependent L2 visa. I am being asked by my employer to apply for SSN asap. But i have few queries if any one can help :

1. Can I apply for SSN immediately as I read in some posts its mentioned to wait for 2 weeks and in others its written since I-94 process is online we can apply immediately ?
2. We will be travelling to India in end of August. I would be going for 3 weeks and my family will return in November. Can my wife apply for SSN after she returns back in November ?

Hi,

Did you hear back regarding your question?

Is the I-94 validates that your details are entered in the system and hence you can apply for SSN soon after?
Also, did they issue you a number right away(or in a day or two), despite the SSN card taking a few weeks to come?

I am landing in next few weeks and just wanted to be sure when to apply for SSN.
