While checking statement for my Savings Bank Account (NRO) with Citibank India, I realized that there are two debit entries - 1 for 30.90% of the credited interest and another 28% of the credited interest. Here are the two entries:
1. TAX DEDUCTION AT SOURCE Tax Deduction - (shows 30.9% of credited interest amount as deducted)
2. WITH HOLDING 28.00 INTEREST DEBITED & REMITTED TO IRS INCOMPLETE DOCUMENTATION RCVD FRM IRS - (shows 28% of credited interest amount as deducted)
I do not remember as having authorized the IRS to deduct anything from my Citibank account. But, I did inform about this account in FBAR as well as the income tax return.
Question 1. Has anybody else seen something similar in their accounts?
Question 2. How can I trace whether IRS actually made this request for withholding 28% tax?
Thanks in advance.
