  • How long does it take to get an SSN?

    Hi,

For all the guys who are on an H1B visa, how long did it take for you to get an SSN?

    Thanks.

  • #2
As long as the SS office approve a card for you, same day or next day. The actual card will arrive in 2 weeks. If they do not approve you right away, you might be subject to verification, which means you cannot leave the country, etc.

      Hi,

Also, can you get your SSN number before the card is mailed to you?
If so, then how long (on an average) does it take for you to get allocated an SSN?

      Thanks.

Well, as long as the SS office approves the number, it is already assigned. They will not normally give you the number instead they will tell you to wait for the actual card to be printed and mailed to you which is about 2 weeks, however ask kindly for the number. If you apply late in the day, you can go back the next afternoon and ask for the number.

dint know you could ASK for the ssn

            Hey

This is interesting .. dint know you could ask for the number .. but do they give it verbally ... coz i have been waiting for an ssn since 2 months now .. and i really cant wait for it to be mailed now .. so asking them once it gets approved seems to be a good idea

            thnx

They will need to see your passport and then give you a letter stating your number. They do not say it aloud (Verbally). You may not use the letter as proof of SSN but can use the number itself.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

                Thnx

Thnx a lot ... i can give it a try

tho it is not related to the topic, could u help me with another question ?

When i was studying i dint work on campus and so dint get a SSN.. Now i m on the OPT and applied for my SSN two months back with my EAD card and passport. They said they cudnt find my EAD card in the system and had to send documents to USCIS for a manual verification. When i visited them again next week they said that they still havnt received the verification from USCIS.. From what i read elsewhere it seems this is a common problem. MY basic problem is that i have signed on with an employer but all my verification and paperwork is stuck coz of the lack of a ssn. i dont know wat to do about this ... Can you think of something

                thnx again

You need to show the SSN application receipt to your employer and employer needs to write "Applied for" in tax documents. For employment verification I-9, employer can use the EAD and passport/visa/DL.
Search for SSN applied for tax forms on the internet and you will find lots of official IRS pages.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

                    Thanks for the reply ....

i ll suggest these things to the HR dept , but here the issue is that it is a hospital , with like a zillion procedures and policies and they are not ready to proceed with the paperwork without the SSN...

Is there anything i can do to get the SSN early ?? i have already talked to my UNIV's immigration specialist and they are working on it with the SEVIS people

                    Thanks a lot again

Getting to know the SSN before receiving the card by mail.

                      Hi,

Did any of you try the suggestion given in this thread? If so, were you successful in getting the SSN number before actually receiving the card by mail? I'm in a similar situation where I need to provide the SSN to the client and can't wait till I get the card by mail (which might take up to 2 weeks).

                        Pls help on this mates?

I am a DV Lottery winner, and I applied for SSN in Maryland, and its almost 4weeks now I'm yet to get it, although I was told I should get it with in 4 weeks. Now, I've got few job offers and they request the SSN for further processing and interview, and I placed a call through to the SSN office they told me Homeland Security is yet to give them a go ahead. I will like to know what I could do in a situation like this pls advice mates. And, what could be done or do you think there's a problem?

Timeframe estimates given by U.S. government agencies (USCIS, NVC, SSA) are "average" or "estimated" or "aimed for," and cannot be relied upon for serious planning.

You might do an INFOPASS appointment and ask a live USCIS staff person to verify whether your current USCIS status can be viewed by other government agencies, specifically SSA.

Hello! We assist immigrant nurses coming into the country. It normally takes about 10-12 days from their arrival for us to bring them to an SSA office and request for their assigned SSN (showing their passports with the visa). SSA will print a letter that shows their SSN, and this letter is what we show their hospital-employers. We've done this step for over hundreds of nurses. The card normally arrives 3-4 weeks upon arrival at the address indicated on their DS 260.

                            Hope this helps!

                              Hi,

i have applied for my SSn on 12th April,2016.

After, reading in the forum i went back to the office with the receipt exactly after 14days & they told me that your case went thru on 12th itself & your SSN has been mailed to your mailing address.

I rechecked my Mailing address which was given in the SSN form & it was absolutely correct.

they asked me to wait for 3-4 days & then to return back if still not received. The lady told me that they will re-issue a new card .

But, my point is that we are allowed to re-issue only 3 cards in a life time. its error from their end, that the card did not reached to me.

Visited local post office, spoke to the delivery guy but, nothing worked out.

Kindly, advise what should i do?
