  • W4 and residential status confusion

Hi, I have recently deputed to Texas,USA for an assignment On January 26,2020 and will be leaving from USA October 30,2020. I did not fill my w4 till August and during all these days in my Paycheck the Fed tax deducted was uniform as my employer considered me as Resident alien in w4. after I updated W4 form as non resident in aug my fed tax withholding increased by 100usd.
I checked irs website and saw if I stay in USA for 183 days or more I am considered as resident alien so should I change it to resident alien in w4.
Also when filing USA returns from India what status should I put so that I can accordingly update my W4 currently

Understanding your W-4 form and residential status is crucial for accurate tax withholding in the U.S. The W-4 determines how much federal income tax your employer withholds from your paycheck, based on information of glassy album like your filing status and number of dependents. However, confusion often arises when your residential status for tax purposes—such as being a resident alien, nonresident alien, or dual-status alien—differs from your immigration status.

This is a pretty common point of confusion. Your tax residency status, resident or nonresident alien, is what really determines how you fill out the W‑4. For nonresident aliens, there are special instructions: you usually write “NRA” or “nonresident alien,” select “Single” even if married, and don’t claim exempt. Your employer will then withhold taxes correctly based on that. It’s always a good idea to double-check your status or talk to a tax professional to make sure everything’s filled out properly.
