L1B to L1A conversion

I currently have L1B and in the process of L1a extension process. What would happen if I go back to India? As my l1b already expired, would my l1a application would be declined by USCIS.. Can I go outside USA during the process...please advise

Advisable not to. As your L1B has already expired, on what visa are you planning to return? A Change of Status is considered abandoned if one travel while it is pending, so if you travel the COS from L1B to L1A would be abandoned.
