  • [L-2 visa] - Is SSN enough to work? SSN vs. EAD ...

    Hi all,

My spouse has a L-2 visa and she would like to work as a freelance photographer.

She already has a social security card on which it is written “valid for work only with DHS authorization” (I have the same information written in my social security card but I have a L-1).

Does she need to fill the form I-765 to work as a freelancer (knowing that she will not work for an employer)?

I prefer to be sure because the I-765 fees are expensive ($380) and the delay could be long (up to 90 days).

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Best regards,

    Fabien.

PS.: Form I-765 is to request an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).

She would need an EAD to work.

This is my opinion not legal advice.

      Thanks raghvi for your opinion.

I' m confused because I read that an EAD was a prerequisite to get a SSN. But my wife has already a social security card (we applied together when we arrived).

And she doesn't want to work for an employer. She will just be a freelancer...

I think I should maybe try to ask the question to a legal expert.

But if anyone has experienced the same situation, you would be welcome to post a comment in this thread.

      Thanks,

      Fabien.
