PED on L1B visa

I got the L1B (Blanket petition) visa in 2014 for the 5 years until 2019. On the stamped visa towards the bottom there is a date called PED and it is up until September 2017 and my i94 is also until the same month September 2017. I understand beyond i94 date I should not work in US but what is the significance of PED?
Appreciate the assistance.

Does it mean I have to apply for the L1B extension if I am in US (or apply a new L1B if outside US) immediately after PED which is September 2017 ?

Or I should stay & work in US until my visa expires, September 2019?

If you still want to continue working until Sept 2019, you need to get an extension in the US before PED of Sept 2017.
