L1 visa changing job and passport renewal

Hi,

My husband is currently holding L1B visa and I'm holding H1B visa.
He is leaving his employer by the end of the year, and switch to another company starting in January. So there may be some gap between two jobs.
Our green card process (AOS) is pending, and we both got our EAD/Advance Parole card already.
And I am the main applicant for our family's AOS, not my husband.

My questions are:

- When he leaves current employer, does his L1B visa invalidate immediately? Is there a grace period? What should he do to avoid staying in US illegally?
- He has planned to go back to home country for a passport renewal. He may already leave the current employer by then and is between jobs. What visa should he apply for getting back to US?

His stay would not be illegal, since he has a AOS pending. He does not need a visa, he will use the Advance parole to re-enter.

He is fine going out & coming back with AP.

Can't he renew his passport within USA by visiting your home country's embassy in USA.
