Is it mandatory to get SSN if you are in US on L1 Visa?
If yes, what are the documents required?

Yes . you need a SSN if you are in L1 and that entitles you that you are working legally. Most(I think all) indian companies will start giving you salary/other benefits after you get your SSN. for more info go through this link
