L2 to L1 conversion

Hi,

I am currently in the US on L2 visa and am still employed (am on leave). My employer now wants to assign me to a project in the US. Is is safe to get a L2 to L1 conversion through my employer while continuing to stay in the US?
Also, how much time does this conversion take?

Advisable to go for one of the following

1) Ask the employer to file L2 to H1B COS and when approved, you can start working.
2) Leave the country and return back in L1 visa.
