Air Ticket For R-1 VISA

Dear Sir,
We have a uncle that is a Buddhist monk in Thailand.
He have to go to USA. He got R1 VISA for 5 years.
He intended to stay at Buddhist temple in USA for 2 years.
Can he buy one way ticket to enter USA, and the end of year 2 he will buy one ticket back to Bangkok?
The monk was told that if he holds one way ticket he cannot be allowed to enter USA. Please kindly make clear of this point.

If your uncle's ...

.... visa allows him a continuous stay of two years in United States, then yes he can get a one-way ticket when he first arrives in the country.
