  • Initial Sevis Transfer

    Hello everyone,

My change of status from F2 to F1 has been recently approved (2 days ago). However, I am having second thoughts about the university for which I have received the approval. I am planning to attend a better university than this one. Is it possible for me to get my sevis transferred to the new school. I haven't yet provided the approval notice to the school. Also, I haven't yet registered for any courses. Can you please suggest me the best way to tackle this issue.

Please let me know if you need further information with regard to my case.
    Thanks.

You will first need to go the first school and they will start your SEVIS record. Then you will need to obtain admission in another school. Then at the discretion of the first school, you can transfer to the second school by completing transfer process. The first school can insist that you attend at least 1 semester with them.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

Below is the FAQ section for F1 transfer procedure. There is a question that particulary deals with the new initial F1 student. It appears that, if a student gets admit from a new school whose start date is within 30 days of the student's entry to USA (on an F1 visa to the old school) the DSO at the current school MUST transfer the I-20. Considering that I have changed my status from F2 to F1 recently and my program start date (at the new school) is within 30 days of my F2 to F1 approval date, will the DSO approve the transfer? To be exact, my F1 approval was issued on Dec 17th 2012 and the new school start date is Jan 14th 2013.
