F1 renewal on OPT STEM extension? (Need some advice)

Hi everyone,

I finished my PhD in December 2105 and am now working on my STEM OPT extension. My EAD is valid until Jan 2019. My F1 visa expired in June 2014. I would like to travel home over Christmas, and would like to know your advice on the chances of getting my F1 renewed on OPT extension, even though I am not a bona fide student. All my papers are in order. Do you guys think it will be a good move, or should I wait until I change my status to a J1 or H1?

Would really appreciate some advice here.
