6 yrs F1 change to permanent residency

Hi guys! can you please help me?

I just want to know if this is possible...

My friend's son entered the US on a tourist visa then studied in the US continuously for 6 years more with F1 visa from 1992- 1998. He said his son applied adjustment of status to that of a lawful permanent resident through the help of lawyer late 1998.

Is this really possible?
