  • Passport validity for applying for a F1 Visa

Hey guys, for getting the USA F1 visa, the USA website says passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of stay.

The program end date on my I-20 is May 2026, and my current passport is valid till January 2026. Will this be an issue while getting the visa?

    Thank you

The rule that your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond the end of the stay (or must be valid until the end of the stay for passports from countries in the 6-month club) just means that the CBP officer at entry will not put a date on your I-94 that is later than 6 months before your passport expiration (or that is later than your passport expiration for passports from countries in the 6-month club).

Since F1 students get "D/S" on their I-94s instead of a date, this doesn't really affect you. All you need is to have your passport have a validity of at least 6 months at the time of entry (or have any length of validity at the time of entry, if your passport is from a country in the 6-month club).

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
