can we do a COS to F-1 in the last semester of study?

Are we 'allowed' to do a Change of status fro ma H visa to a F-1 visa a few months before the last semester starts? Let's say I graduate in dec 2012, so can I initiate the transfer in march 2012 and then still be eligible for OPT/internships once I graduate?

OPT requires that you be in full-time student status for 1 academic year before applying. Are you maintaining H1 status by working and studying full-time? Discuss this with your school's DSO.

thank you for the information and apologies for not mentioning my current status. I'm studying full-time on a H visa(h-4). So I don't have issues there but was worried that the OPT period might not be given to me since I'm on F-1 for only 1 semester.
