Transit visa for British Citizen?

Dear sir/madam

I wondered if you could tell me if i need a visa to enter the US in order to get a connecting flight to Guatemale?

I will be flying from london in march with a one way ticket to guatemala as I haven't fully decided on my length of stay. Most of the flights have connections in San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc. Can I stop-over in these airports for the change over? I am a British Citizen.
