221g replied but no respond please help

My parents had been to the interview for visitor visa every thing was fine ,they took their passports and dds for visa and issued them 221g saying them to reply those questions and send it by e-mail and they marked the e-mail address on the 221g .
They said we will process your visa asap when we recieve the ans.
Now as we have replied all the answers in mail they havent replied us about issuing visa or more requirement of documents.
What should i do now?
1)Can i call the consulate and ask the status of the visa
2)Do my parents have to go to consulate
3)Do i have to Just wait for the passport

in case my parents don't receive the passports soon, then how long do we have to wait to call the consulate & find out about the status of the visa. does the consulate reply by e-mail before sending the visa or do they send it directly, in which case we might have to call tts services, is that right??
