Lost my parents old expired passport

I am applying B2 visa for my parents. My parents passports expired in 2011 and they got them renewed. Recently they lost their old passports which were expired. They have not traveled anywhere with their old passports. Would a police complaint about the loss of old passport suffice or would there be anything else required? Please clarify.
