  • Mom applying for B2 visa

    My mother wants to attend her nephews wedding in USA. She is 67 years old widow. She has only 2 daughters. One is in Delhi who lives with her husband and daughter and is a doctor. Other (myself) is a divorce and living with my mother. My mother has around USD 20,000 in her account and I am working as a web developer from home and earning around USD 800 per month and my sister is a doctor earning USD 1500 per month. She has been a housewife and never worked. What are her chances of getting visitor visa? She has no property.
    Please advise.

    Non-working widows find it very difficult.
    Still, no harm in applying once, she could get lucky.

    Is it her brother's son getting married? What is bro's visa status?
    who are all the relatives she has in US? On what visas?

      Yes, her brother's son is getting married. Her brother is US citizen. Other relatives she has in US are her distant cousins.

      Also, please suggest, can both of us sponsor together(my sister and me) or only one can sponsor her trip?
      Will she be called for interview or someone has to accompany her. She is 67 years old. Will a trip to Singapore or Europe increase her chances?

        She will have to go for the interview on her own.
        No, travel to singapore or europe will be a waste ;
        because her purpose is not tourism but attending a family function.

        Your income 40k and her savings 10L are not enough to fund her trip.
        She can show funding from your sis and son-in-law if he is earning
        very well.

        Make sure she carries the wedding card and requests a short stay
        like 3-4 weeks , both on DS 160 and at the interview.

          But will she not receive drop box facility? She is 67 years old.

            drop box is for 80 or above .

            Does she have health issues?

              Thanks for your quick reply.
              No, she is not having health issues as such. She is diabetic and has hearing problem. She uses hearing aid.
              Also could you suggest whether getting some agent to work for her visa will be good or we should apply ourselves?

                There is no role for an agent in this.

                Application process is simple 3 steps.

                You have to complete a DS 160 online, pay the fees online and schedule two appointments( biometrics + interview) on phone.

                Can your sister travel with her to the wedding? That will increase the likelihood of success.
                Reasons ;
                *Elderly person going alone to the wedding may not look natural to the officer.
                * sis's funding in that situation will look natural because she is also traveling
                * sis will be leaving behind her husband as a tie .
                * she can handle the interview well if your mother has problems due to her hearing.

                  She will need marriage card from her brother. What else will she need from her brother since he is not her sponsor but she will live there in his accommodation till she is there.
                  Also, can her US brother sponsor her? Will it create problems?

                    A US citizen brother ( immediate relative) sponsoring is usually a negative if added to her widow and housewife status.
                    Because then the officer thinks she has a support platform in US with no spouse , no work in India.

                    That said , her application anyway is more a game of chance, so if your sis cannot accompany her or fund her, let her brother send an I-134.
                    Also needed will be his bank statements, tax return, a copy of his US passport and an Invite with the wedding card.

                    If someone in India is funding, then he just needs to send an invite, wedding card and a copy of his US passport.
