Help with expired B2 Visa please.

Hi, here is the situation. Our family has a B2 visa. It expired almost 10 years ago. I didn't know about this till few month ago. Our family applied to be permanent resident a LONG time ago, after waiting and waiting, we got an answer and we got rejected. We got our documents back along with the sponsor and gave it over to a different laywer. After 5 years there's still no answer and the only thing our lawyer is telling us is to wait. From what I've heard, we should've received an answer 2-3 years ago. From what I've heard, there's a BIG chance that our documents got lost. Is there a way to find those documents back so we can Reapply? If not, what can I do from here?
