I have been waiting for my tourist visa approval for over a year now because i want to visit the US for longer than 3 months but no joy so far. I have a European Union passport so i am eligible to travel on the visa waiver program also. My question is, can i travel on the visa waiver while my tourist visa is being processed or is this not permitted?

A year? Are you kidding? In which European country does it take so long to get a visa?
I suppose you can use the VWP, but know that not all EU countries are eligible. The issue here, however, is why it's taking so long, especially if you think you're from a country that qualifies for the VWP. Have you called them? -
Hi cafeconleche. Basically the thing is that i have a UK passport but i am currently residing in the Pakistan. I applied for a tourist visa in December 2012 but still haven't heard back from the consulate. The online status of my application says "Processing". My passport is stuck with the consulate because they keep it when you apply for the visa. Do you think it makes sense for me to get my passport back from them and travel on the VWP for 3-months instead or would that put the visa processing on hold?Comment

Hell yes get it back. Or at least get in touch with them and ask them why they're sitting on their arses for a year. You know, US consulates lose things all the time, or misplace them for months on end. There's always the chance that your application is in some pile in a corner.Comment
