Cover letter reallly required for personal tourist visa?

Do i have to write a cover letter for tourist visa. In sample documents i see a cover letter for parent but if i will be there myself for interview than is there any need for it?

you have not given full info. like are you in US inviting your parents.If yes, and even if you are in India , they won't allow you to accompany your parents at the interview.

what is your purpose? no cover letter but an invitation from the host /company in US will be required.
