  • name correction in visitor visa

    Hi

My parents recently got their visitor visa at Chennai Consulate.
Thanks a bunch to the immihelp website and everyone contributing
    to the discussion forums

There is a name difference in the visa issued for my mother.
Originally in her passport her surname is left blank and given name
is her full name. Her D156 was also filled in the same way.

However in the visa the Surname is printed as her
full name and Given name is printed as 'FNU'.

Since her given name(first name) is printed incorrectly I am worried she will
have problems at POE and when filling I-94.

    What does FNU mean?
What is the procedure to get the name corrected?
    How long does it take?
Do we have to personally go to the consulate?
    Any forms to be filled?
Anyone with similar experience please reply with details.

    Thanks
    rkh

      Hi!

      Hi!
      FNU - FIrst Name Unknown.

I think it's not a problem becoz my friend has the similar way in her visa too. Just that she was asked to fill all legal documents FNU for Given name. So I don't think it is a problem.

However if you had it corrected on the passport(by means of an observation) or filled it correctly in the DS156 (Before the date of appointment) then you could request the consulate to issue the visa asyou wanted with the Gven name and Surname seperately.

Thanks a lot for both your replys.
The link posted by the admin cleared my doubt.
Looks like everything is fine and there is no need to change anything.

        Regards,

Like to clarify one thing .
In I94 what does my mother fill.
Can she write first name as FNU or as in passport?

          Thanks,
          rkh

From now onwards, your mother's last name is 'everything in Last column in visa' and first name is 'FNU'.
