  • Can maximum duration be less than 6 months for Indians?

    I am from India.

I have read that the validity can be up to 10 years and duration of stay can be at most 6 months.

During my consulate interview, if I say that I want to stay in the US for 1 month, will the visa I get allow me to stay for no more than one month or will I still get to stay there for up to 6 months if I change my mind and decide to stay there for longer than 1 month?

saying 1 month or 6 months doesn't do anything to the number of days you stay in the US

When I applied for my father, he told them that he'd stay 3 weeks because he was busy and he still got a 5 years multiple entry visa.

the POE officer decides how long you gonna stay and most of the time they give you 6 months. The POE officer depends n your papers and answers not on what you wrote on your DS-160 or what you said at the interview.

P.S. The visa just allows you to enter the US and you can travel anytime before your visa expiration day, but the legal stay in the US is what the POE officer stamps on your I-94 even if your visa is going to expire the next day

can the POE stamp have less than 6 months in I-94?

I am planning on a solo-trip for all around 3 months in the US. There is no one sponsoring my visit, but I have the money to pay for it.

If I manage to get a visa, how long might the POE enter on my I-94?

      Thanks

Yes. They can stamp anything. I read even days in some suspicious cases. Most likely one gets 6 months though. They would only grant less than 6 months in case they are suspicious of something.

It depends on how long you ask for and on the papers you have to show that

dont worry, they won't give you less than a month. Last October I wrote 20 days on my DS 160 and I also told the POE officer that I'll stay only 20 days cause I had to go back home for my sister's wedding and still stamped 6 months on my I-94

            hey jon,
need not worry man, minimum duration of visa can be up-to 6 months depending upon the purpose of visiting the country. In your case you can go for 6 months visa to be on safer side, this can be used in future too if planning again to visit. :-)
