Bank Passbook

Are applicants required to carry their bank passbooks with them? I have not heard of this before but my mother said the officer asked the couple in front of her for their passbooks. My mother did not have hers with her and decided she was not getting her visa. I cannot imagine the tension she went through We need a better process!
