query regarding open ticket

Hi All!
I have a doubt regarding open ticket. My mother is coming to US early june with one year open ticket.
1. Do the officer at POE create any problems if they see a open ticket for 1 yr meaning they may simply issue 1 or 3 months?

2.Can she tell them that she has not purchased return ticket and not show them the return tickets.

Please advice.

They do not always look at/ask about your ticket. But the question they always ask is ;; How long do you wish to stay? Let your mother answer that
with "4-5 months". If they do look at the ticket, she can say she was not sure
about the return date so she left it open.

By the way, which airline did she book with, as most airlines want you
to specify a return date. And, is an open ticket more expensive?
