  • New Passport with address changed and US Visa availability

    Hie,
I am posting it on behalf of someone. The person is an Indian citizen and lives in India. The passport still has 3 years to expire. The US Visa validity is valid for 9 more years. But, the person wants to apply for the re-issue of the Passport to show the change in the addess. The previous and new address belongs to the same country(India). But, the US Visa is in the previous address Passport . Can the person carry both the old and new Passports for traveling to US? Is there any compulsion that the person must apply for Visa again to show the new Indian address in the new Passport ? What is the solution?

Yes, you can have visa in old passport & travel to USA with both the passports.

Thats what everyone does - no one gets a new visa each time they renew their passport.

Thank you. Yes, I am aware of it. But, I read somewhere that when a damaged passport or the passport before the expiry date is given to the office for the new passport, they make a hole into the passport which can mean denial of Visa in that old passport too. For this reason, I asked it here. I should have edited my question for more clarity.

Which country passport do you have ?

Yes they punch holes on old/replaced passports to show it's already expired or no longer valid. The B2 visa in the old passport remains valid even if there's a new passport issued. Always carry them together when travelling to the US. You can staple both the old and new passports (with the new one on top); border officers will know where to look for the B2 visa. Below is a screenshot of my 3 passports, stapled together. The B2 visa is in the oldest passport with punch holes.
