Return tickets:Very imp question

Hi Guys,

I am planning on travelling to US very soon and I have booked my ticket to reach there but not the return tickets.Now my questions are-

1. How much will it matter if at all if I don't have return tickets to produce at POE??

2. What possible excuses could I give for not having return tickets to the Immigration officer??

Please help me on this specifically.

Its unlikely the airlines will make you board without a return ticket with a visitors visa

Many airlines have open ticket system.. I know air india has 6mths... and then you can extend to upto a year...
Not a bad idea... BTW why would you not want to have a return ticket on a visitor visa....??
