Hi there,
My husband and I are in the process of adopting a child from India; we live in the US. I am an Indian citizen, and was born in Bombay. I need to obtain a certified copy of my birth certificate - I only have one original, and they will not take a photocopy. Can someone please tell me where to get a certified copy mailed to me here in the US? I have read on here that I need to contact the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. I was on their website, but didn't see any contact information regarding birth certificates. Does anyone have a specific number for them? Also, do you know how much it would cost to get a couple of copies? Thank you so much!

There are basically two steps to adopting a child internationally, first the homestudy (for which you have to use a local agency) and then the dossier (paperwork that you submit to the placing agency, and the placing agency can be located anywhere in the US). The Indian government gives NRI families special treatment as far as adopting from India, so that is what drove us to choose India. Besides of course, the fact that Indian children are adorable.
