this site is very useful,thanks for each and everybody for sharing their experiences and giving responses.
my parents and myself who is working as microbiologist applied for visitors visa in december,hmm lot of tension.our situation is:my dad is retired govt doctor but still doing in a private hospital mom house wife.as my dad is having pathology seminar in pittsburgh so myself and mom also want to accompany and visit some places in usa.and in application we mentioned duration of stay 6months.is it ok? and in purpose of visit i mentioned to explore some schools is it ok?what are the chances of getting visa?we are sponsoring our own trip.last year we visited europe and dubai also so there are other country stamps also.and i visited usa in 2001 on h4 and back within 8months.now its expired and im staying with my parents only.so can anyone please tell me what VO EXPECTS from us?and what are the chances of getting the visa?

1. Let your parents apply separately and you apply separately.
2. Change the stay to 2-3 months
3. Purpose of visit for your father “attending seminar, tourism”, mother “accompanying spouse and tourism” and for you “tourism”

1. Yes you are right… getting visa for young people is bit tough as they may not enough ties to go back to India. Same thing applies whether young people apply alone or with parents. Applying separately will improve the chances of getting visa for them as they can show you as family tie.
2. The visitor visa is for the person who wants to visit US for short period, but if you specify “exploring schools” they will doubt that you will not return from US and can reject visa.
3. How come yours is a hand-written application, it needs to be printed out from VFS site once the appointment is confirmed. You can edit it online.

Don't specify that you want to explore schools. That is a pure contradiction of the definition of tourist visa. Go to the same VFS office as where you got the appointment from and tell them that you need to change a few fields in the form and I think they will let you edit the form or give you a new form.

I think if one goes to VFS office in person, they will fill the form manually. Only those who get the online appointments will have the ability to edit the form online.

Are visitor visas hard to get for Muslims?

My boyfriend is Algerian. Is it possible to get a visitor visa for him? How long do you think it would take? Do I have to go to Washington or NY to do this? Or does he apply at the embassy in Algeria? Just trying to find out in advance what we need to know.
