  • Help! A few questions

My parents want to visit us sometime next year and are in the process of making an appoinment for a visa interview. They live in Kerala, and have the option of going to Bombay or Chennai for the interview. As of now, they plan on going to Chennai, is there any reason I should advise them against that? The situation:
My father has a couple of years before he retires, they plan to travel on LFC (on holiday, he can produce papers that mention that he is on vacation from work). As of now, they want to sponsor themselves (that is probably a factor in their favor for the visa), they can show around 3 lakh rupees in the bank apart from other assets like fixed deposits and property (probably another 12-15 lakhs), the plane tickets will be paid by my fathers company. I am a student in the US (F1 visa), my husband is working here (H1-B visa), my brother is working in the US and so is his wife(final stages of the green card process). Incidentally, all 4 of us live in different places right now.
    Some questions:
    (1) My parents need to give an address that they plan to stay at. Which one of our address should they give, or does it not matter?
    (2) Does the amount of money they can show seem reasonable? Or should one of us sponsor them? Then again, which one of us?
    (3) Given an option between Chennai and Mumbai, is any one more favorable?
I understand that these are vague questions, and that there is no one correct answer, I just want to see if there is a general opinion about them.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Do not worry, these are not vague questions; small issues can be important for a visitor visa.
1.Does not matter if they will finance their own trip.
2.I guess it is fine to show self-financing, since his company is paying for the trip. ANd he must get a letter from company attesting to that fact.
Also, he must present his own funds to the officer properly. Get a statement of assets by a CA on his letterhead ; showing all liquid and fixed assets and a big figure of total net worth at bottom in large bold letters so it is visible at one glance. ALso, he should carry his tax returns .
    3. Either one.

There is another issue that you have not asked about but I think is important to mention ; If they do not have any children living with them in India; it may be an important deciding factor.

Thanks, peace, for your comments and suggestions.
As you mentioned, I did not talk about any other children in India because there are none, my brother and I are the only children of my parents. I realise that this is definitely a big negative factor, but one that cannot be changed, hence, I guess I didnt think dwelling on it would help. There is a cousin (fathers brothers daughter) who my parents have been looking after for quite a few years (she is an orphan), but she is in college now, and is no longer living with them. And a grandmother who stays with my parents for a few months every year.
I guess my main questions were regarding the money part. If the money they can show in the bank (3 lakhs) isnt enought, we might want to sponsor them (I guess I wanted to know if that, in addition to 12-15 lakhs in assets and property sounds reasonable enough) (forgetting, for now, that his company will be sponsoring them, and assuming that they will be paying for themselves)
Thanks a lot for your comments, you have no idea how helpful they are in the confusing world of immigration!

        Each officer has a different way of assessing financial ability;

Many may only ask one question; What is your income? If not satisfied with the figure, may deny rightaway saying that your income is not enough to support the trip. And not look at any other evidence of funds despite requests. So you must make sure he has a good salary too.

Others will ask one question; Do your children send you any money? A yes answer may mean a denial.

Others may be more flexible and will let you present documents.
If it comes to looking at deposits,
showing 10-12 lacs as all deposits (savings, fixed, bonds) is fine. If it is only 3 lacs in deposits and rest in property then it is not enough.
