Tax returns for visitor's visa

Hi,

A quick question on getting last 3 years tax returns..for sponsoring visitor visa. I do not have a copy of the 2004 federal tax returns but have only W2s. Do they really go back to see tax returns that old? i mean i have tax returns for 2006 and 2005.

Any advice would be appreciated.
