  • Information regarding sponsoring visitor visa

    Hi,

I want to sponsor my mother in-law to visit us in July and see different places in the US. By them I will finish 6 months of stay in the US.

Your site says that I need to send income tax returns for the last 2 yrs as one of the document proofs. Since I will be filing my 1st tax return next year, what do I need to to?

    Please advise me.

    Thanks and regards,
    subho

It is not enough to just show a few grand in your account. The tax returns act as proof of the sponsor's steady income, proof of the sponsor's financial stability and proof of the legality and validity of the sponsor presence in the US. Not having the tax returns does not in any way help or strengthen your m-i-l's visa application.

On the contrary, if she applies at this point there are going to be serious questions asked at the consulate about why the applicant needs to visit her family so soon after that family got to the US and why the applicant's travel/tourism plans cannot wait until her family in the US has fully settled down.

It will also show some desperation in the applicant to get to the US which will make it more difficult for her to prove her intention to return.

So if there isn't an urgent need, do try to wait at least until you've lived here for a year or two before sponsoring a family member. After all, why risk rejection unnecessarily if it can be avoided by waiting a while longer?

However, if you decide to apply then do give us the details of what happened, regardless of the outcome.
