  • Inlaws rejected, no translator provided

Dear forum, please help us, my husband is devastated.

I am a US citizen and my husband is waiting for his greencard, it has been in namecheck for a long time. We were hoping to bring his parents and his nephew here for a visit since we do not know when we will be able to go to India. It has been 2 years since he has seen his family.

There were well prepared when they went to the appointment. They took one of their grandchildren with them who would be traveling with them to visit us in the US. They had every possible document. They are the primary caretakers of their grandchildren, the mother is not much of a mother, but they have not officially adopted the children. They were only taking one of the children with them on the trip.

First of all, they were told by the travel agent that set up the appointment that there would be a translator. There was no translator. The officer asked the 12 year old child a couple of questions, using him as a translator. He looked at the application and my inlaws were not asked for any of the documents.
    Some of the questions were:
    1. What does your son do for a living
    2. How many grandkids do you have?
    3. They asked the child was his own father does for a living
    4. What does my inlaw do for a living. (he is a retired businessman. My mother in law is retired as well.)
?????????/Is it a strike against you if you are retired?

They were rejected and given a form that says 214b and try again in 6 months. We don't know if it said anything else, we want to have them scan and email a copy to us, they dont' read English.
Per this web-site, it sounds like you can reapply sooner, I am confused by the conflicting information.

I am outraged. We will be trying to call the Chennai consulate tonight, please let me know if you have any suggestions.

My inlaws spent signficant money to pay the fees and make the trip to chennai, 8 hours by train. The trip was taxing on my mother in law. It is so wrong that our government can treat people this way.

Is it best to hand them all of the documents regardless of what they ask for?'
Is it better to not use us as sponsors? They had information ready to both show their own property and finances, as well as our finances. They were not asked for anything.
Can they just reject you based on the fact that you look scared?
Can they reject you because my husband doesn't have a greencard yet and is still waiting?
Are they required to give you the exact reason? All we know so far is 214b.

    Please help!

    Thank you,

    Mrs. Syamala
