Passport validity time for interview apt

I would like to sponsor my sister's family for visitors visa. We are very confused for paying Visa fee and taking appointment.

We want them to appear for interview in Nov/Dec. But their passports are
expiring in Oct/Nov. They already applied for passport renewal but it will take 1 month + to get new one.

Can we pay visa fee at the bank using the OLD passport and take the new one for the interview?

Or whatever fee we pay on OLD passport is non-usable as they cancel the OLD passport and give the NEW number.

Yes. They can pay the Visa fee and also using their old passports.
But when going for the visa interview, they need to take the new passports along with their old passports.

Thanks for your response. I will ask my folks to go ahead and pay the fee using OLD passports.
