Help PULLING OUT HAIR

We have a friend who wants to come to the states from Australia again ON a B2 visa. Before he had been on the visa waiver. He is 20 and lives with his parents in a seperate flat. Here is the issue
His Mum and dad are extremely Protective and very controlling. He will be done with Chef school in December and would love to tour the USA before he starts his search for his 1st year apprenticeship. This will be the last time he can travel until he completes his 4 year apprenticeship as he is going full force on it.

Since he is not working and lives with them..(he does have bank account) how will he show ties if his parents are full out domineering and controlling.
The last time he did this he got a visa waiver and a ticket and then told them. BUT with him and us wanting to give him a good vacation and some fun for those 6 months touring the USA with us how can he show ties if his parents are being that way? Any other ways he can do this????
