  • Visitor VISA granted only for 6 Months

    Hi,

My In-Laws had recently attended the interview and was been granted a B2 Visa.My In-Laws said all the people in the Queue in front of them were denied a VISA and they were the only last couple in the line that were granted a VISA.It a Telugu translation.

Today they received the passport but the validity was showing VISA issued in May and valid until November 2008. I thought the Visitor VISA are granted for 10 Years multiple entries .

    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks

It is up to the consular officer to give visa duration. Everyone is not given 10 years always.

No, not 10 yrs always. A 6 month , 1yr , 3yr, 5 yr are all possible. Depending on each person's situation. A 6 month is usually given to people who's situation leaves a bit of doubt if they will return, so the embassy wishes to see how they will use it.

THEY SHOULD USE THIS VISA VERY WISELY, SO THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE NOT DENIED AND ARE GIVEN A 10 YR VISA;-----

*Stay in US for 2-3 months only. Some parents use the full 6 month stay granted to them at entry. That is ok when you have a 10 yr visa but not ok when you have a 6 month visa. The next time they apply for the visa in India , the officer will deny if they stayed full 6 months. That is an indication to the embassy that the person likes to stay in US and is likely to settle there.

*Do not apply for an extension while in US. That is another mistake
parents on a 6 month visa make.
