Volunteer work on Tourist visa

Hi

I'm visiting USA, and have a tourist visa, I'm here whith my boyfriend who is a visiting scholar. I've seen that Ohio state university (I'm staying in Columbus, Ohio) has a free tutor program and I was considering volunteering to help. It's a non-paid volunteer job, but as I'm only here on a tourist visa, I don't kknow if I'm allowed to participate. I'm from Denmark and I'm here for 5 months. So the question is can I do volunteer work on a tourist visa?
